Introduction

Jessica Tarahata Hagedorn was born in Manila, Philippines in 1949. She moved to San Francisco in 1963. To further pursue play writing and music, she moved to New York in 1978 and continues to be a poet, storyteller, musician, playwright, and multimedia performance artist.

Recognition&Awards

In 1985, 1986, and 1988, she received MacDowell Colony Fellowship. She earned a 1990 National Book Award nomination and an American Book Award.

Influences

Due to her complex background, Jessica Hagedorn has a unique perspective to Asian American literature. Her works "focus on different aspects of Filipino experience and American influence on immigrants. Her influence are not only on written literature, but also on songs, images and spoken dialogue."
